Battle of Antietam Sept. 15, 1862 Sharpsburg Maryland

General George B. McClellan confronted Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Sharpsburg, Maryland.
This was the bloodies day in Americas history. The Union attacked the Confederates against Lee's
army. The Union also attacked the the center of the Confederates army. Confederates had a crucial
moment General Hill arrived from Harpers Ferry did a sneek attack on the Union. That drove the Burnside
back which ended the battle. Lee was still out numbered he trusted his men and beat the Union. General
McClellen sent very little of his army. He failed the attack on the Confederates. General Lee's sent his
men back home. The battle came out inconclusive.

Battle gave President Lincoln the opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation

Battle of Spotsylvania Court House
May 8-21 1864 Spotsylvania County Virginia



Union- Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant and Major Gen. George G. Meade

This two week battles was a series of combats along the Spotsylvania front. The Confederates won the race to Spotsylvania.The Union attacked agianst the Bloody Angle. They captured
Lee's army and almost cut the Confederates army in half. The Confederates pugged the
gap and the fought against the Union for 20 hours. It was the most gruesome fights in the Civil War.
Lee had weak part in his line and the Union took advantage of that. The Union broke the enemy
line. That was a big deal to brake a trench line and wars later used the same ideas on how
to brake a line. The Confederates didn't let that stop them. Lee led his men in a counterattack.
His men didn't go and they wanted safer spot. Lee took them to a safer spot. Grant he moved
along the southeast road Lee was unable to block. After that both armies position themselves
along the North Anna River. The battle came out inconclusive.
